Lamya Hussain Gargash

Emirati photographer and filmmaker Lamya Hussain Gargash was born in Dubai in 1982 and studied Visual Communications at the American University of Sharjah, from which she graduated in 2004. In 2005, she went to the UK to continue her studies and recieved a Masters of Arts in Communication Design from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in 2007.

Her work frequently dwells on themes of identity, culture and the passage of time, as evoked in modes of dress and the design of architectural spaces.

Her work has been featured internationally, most recently at the 2009 Sharjah Biennial; in Dubai Next (organized at the Vitra Museum by Rem Koolhaas and Jack Persekian in conjunction with Art Basel 2008); in Abu Dhabi Art, Talk & Sensations (organized by Fabrice Bousteau in conjunction with artparis Abu Dhabi 2008); and at the Locarno Film Festival 2006.

Solo projects include Presence, which records the process of urbanization and spatial abandonment in the UAE, and Dubai/Lodon, which compares the fashion styles of Emirati women in the two cities.

 

Showcase Artists

Ebtisam Abdulaziz is an artist and writer and holds a BA in Science and Mathematics. She’s a member of the Emirates Fine Art Society and the Al Tashkeel editorial team. Her work has been exhibited at 7th Sharjah Biennial, 2006 Nafas exhibition at IFA (Germany), Virginia Commonwealth Arts University Doha (Qatar), Bahrain Culture Festival, the Sharjah Arab Contemporary Art Museum and the “No Such Place” photography exhibition (USA).

Tarek Al-Ghoussein is a UAE based photographer and Professor of Photography at the American University of Sharjah. A Palestinian, born in Kuwait 1962, his work has been exhibited in the 7th Sharjah Biennial, the Heidelberg Museum, the Vitra Design Museum, & the 1st Brussels Biennale and the Singapore Biennale. Al-Ghoussein’s work is in permanent collections at the Sharjah Art Museum, Darat Al Funoon (Jordan), Royal Photography Museum Denmark and Victoria and Albert Museum (UK).

Huda Saeed Saif is an artist with a degree in general physics from the UAE University of Al Ain. She’s a member of the Emirates Fine Art Society, and of the Tashkeel editorial team. Her work has been exhibited at the 10th Cairo International Biennale, 8th Sharjah Biennale and 16th ICAA International Art Festival (Korea). Huda is also the author of The Five Dimensions, 2008.

Hassan Sharif is a painter, installation artist and caricaturist. He is a founding member of the Emirates Fine Art Society and of the Group of Five. He is the author of New Art (1995), Sharp Tools for Making Art (1995), The Concept of Art (1997), and Al Khamsa (2003). Sharif received a special award at the Sharjah Biennale 2003. His work has been exhibited at the Cairo International Biennial, Havana Biennial and most recently at Sharjah Arts Museum, the DIFC and the Creek Art Fair. His work is in permanent collections of private collectors in the UAE, Sittard Art Center (Holland), Sharjah Art Museum (UAE) and Arab Museum of Modern Art (Qatar).
