Lamya Hussain Gargash

Emirati photographer and filmmaker Lamya Hussain Gargash was born in Dubai in 1982 and studied Visual Communications at the American University of Sharjah, from which she graduated in 2004. In 2005, she went to the UK to continue her studies and received a Masters of Arts in Communication Design from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in 2007. Her work frequently dwells on themes of identity, culture and the passage of time, as evoked in modes of dress and the design of architectural spaces.

Her work has been featured internationally, at the 2009 Sharjah Biennial; in Dubai Next (organized at the Vitra Museum by Rem Koolhaas and Jack Persekian in conjunction with Art Basel 2008); in Abu Dhabi Art, Talk & Sensations (organized by Fabrice Bousteau in conjunction with artparis Abu Dhabi 2008); and at the Locarno Film Festival 2006.

Solo projects include Presence, which records the process of urbanization and spatial abandonment in the UAE, and Dubai/London, which compares the fashion styles of Emirati women in the two cities.

Lamya Hussain Gargash is represented by The Third Line, Dubai, UAE.
